Course Content
Advanced Studio Techniques
This Unit is designed to enable candidates to develop an understanding, and to demonstrate their practical ability, of the processes involved in multi-track recording, mixing and mastering. It provides candidates with the knowledge and skills to plan and conduct a multi-track recording session, to complete a fully automated mix-down and to create a production quality final master. It is primarily intended to complement skills developed in other areas of sound capture, processing, mix-down and editing. It is aimed at those who plan a career in sound production as engineer or producer.
Audio for Multimedia
This Unit is designed to develop candidates’ skills in the design and use of audio within multimedia artifacts. The overall context of this Unit has been developed to give a detailed and practical insight into the planning, development, creation and application of audio use within a multimedia context. This Unit is intended for candidates hoping to pursue a career in audio production for multimedia artifacts.
Digital Audio Theory
This Unit is designed to give candidates a clear knowledge and understanding of the principles of digital audio theory and of the processes behind practical digital audio work. This Unit is intended primarily for candidates who are interested in pursuing a career in all aspects of sound production.
Digital Audio Workstations 2
This Unit is designed to give the candidate an advanced level of understanding of digital audio workstation operation and the ability to engineer a multi-track recording session for sound production. It will give the candidate the knowledge required to utilise complex functions and the synchronous running of dual applications in a digital audio workstation. It is also designed to give the candidate the knowledge and skills to take a sound production project to a conclusion by creating an edited production master. It is intended for those wishing to develop a career in sound production.
Sound Production: Management Skills and Legal Issues
This Unit is primarily designed to raise awareness of management and legal issues associated with working in the audio and sound production industries. It is intended to expand the candidate's knowledge of management and law and its application within industry and will develop knowledge gained in the HN Unit: Working in the Creative Industries (DJ3A 34). It will help prepare candidates who intend taking up administrative or managerial roles within the industry and will provide an in-depth understanding of management skills and the functions of contracts and intellectual property as applied within the industry.
Sound Production Practice 2
This Unit is designed to give candidates a clear knowledge and advanced understanding of sound production practice. It will prepare them to undertake complex recording tasks, from a brief, by providing them with the practical skills involved in the spatial miking, recording and accurate replay of audio sources. This Unit is intended primarily for candidates who are interested in pursuing a career in sound production.
Sound Production Theory 2
This Unit is designed to give candidates a clear knowledge and advanced understanding of sound production theory. It will prepare them for any practical sound recording by underpinning key sound production knowledge. This Unit is intended primarily for candidates who are interested in pursuing a career in sound production.
Sound Reinforcement 2
The purpose of this Unit is to extend and develop the experience of candidates who have completed the HN Unit Sound Production: Sound Reinforcement 1 (DJ38 34). Candidates will develop a wider knowledge of sound reinforcement technologies whilst extending their system set-up and test techniques. The Unit is also designed to further develop candidates’ awareness of the variety of sound reinforcement technologies currently available and apply the correct techniques necessary for high-power amplification to a variety of sound sources. Candidates will also develop rigorous techniques for system equalisation utilising knowledge from the HN Unit Acoustics 1 (DJ1W 34). This Unit is intended primarily for candidates who are interested in pursuing a career in sound production.
Sound Production: Graded Unit 2
This Unit is designed to provide evidence through portfolio and presentation that the candidate has achieved the following principal aims of the HND Sound Production:
- an ability to analyse and synthesise knowledge and skills acquired through study
- an ability to develop study, organisational and research skills
- an ability to develop proficiency in the creative and use of sound production technology and applications
- an ability to integrate these skills in practical or business application and reflect on this integration
- an ability to develop competencies in a range of specialised areas in line with their preferred career aims
- an ability to develop critical analysis; to reflect on own work and continually strive for best practice
- to enable progression to further study in sound or a related discipline
- to enable the adoption of innovative practices and creativity in work and ability to respond quickly to the challenges posed by changes in the sound production and audio industries
- an ability to develop personal skills and follow audio industry protocol
